What is the Security+ SY0-701 certification and who is it for?

CompTIA Security+ is a vendor-neutral security certification: it does not validate a product, but the fundamentals every cybersecurity professional needs. SY0-701 is the code of the current exam version. Compared with earlier versions, it puts more emphasis on Zero Trust, cloud and hybrid environments, automation and governance.

In short: the exam has up to 90 questions, including performance-based ones, lasts 90 minutes and requires a score of 750 on a 100–900 scale. There are no mandatory prerequisites, but CompTIA recommends Network+ level knowledge and around two years of IT administration experience with a security focus.

In Morocco, Security+ mainly suits systems and network technicians and administrators moving into security, graduates of engineering schools and OFPPT aiming for a first role, and career changers who already have a solid IT background.

What are the 5 SY0-701 domains and how much does each weigh?

The official syllabus is split into five domains, each with a set weight in the exam. Let those weights guide your study time: security operations alone account for more than a quarter of the questions.

  • General Security Concepts (12%): security controls, the CIA triad, AAA, Zero Trust, change management, cryptography and PKI basics
  • Threats, Vulnerabilities & Mitigations (22%): threat actors, attack vectors, social engineering, application and hardware vulnerabilities, indicators of malicious activity, mitigation techniques
  • Security Architecture (18%): architecture models (cloud, on-premises, hybrid, IoT), securing infrastructure, data protection, resilience and recovery
  • Security Operations (28%): hardening, asset and vulnerability management, monitoring, identity and access management, automation, incident response, investigation
  • Security Program Management & Oversight (20%): governance, risk management, third-party risk, compliance, audits, awareness

How does the Security+ exam work: questions, time and score?

The SY0-701 exam has up to 90 questions in 90 minutes. You will find single- and multiple-answer questions as well as performance-based questions (PBQs): configuring a firewall rule, matching attacks to countermeasures, analysing a log extract, placing controls in an architecture. PBQs often appear at the start of the exam and take longer.

The score is calculated on a 100–900 scale, and you need 750 to pass. The exam is taken in English. Remember that one minute per question is only an average: keep a margin for the PBQs.

A simple tactic works well: if a PBQ stalls you, flag it, answer the multiple-choice questions first, then come back with the time left. Read question keywords carefully ("BEST", "MOST", "FIRST"): several answers may look right, but only one fits the exact context described. And never leave a question unanswered before you finish.

  • Format: up to 90 questions, multiple choice and PBQs
  • Duration: 90 minutes
  • Passing score: 750 out of 900
  • Validity: 3 years, renewable through the CompTIA CE program

OnVUE or a Pearson VUE centre: where to take the exam in Morocco?

The exam is delivered by Pearson VUE, with two options. The first, OnVUE, lets you take it online from home or the office, watched by a remote proctor through your webcam. It is convenient if you live in Agadir, Fes, Tangier or a city without a nearby centre, but the environment is closely checked: a closed, quiet room, a clear desk, a single screen and no unauthorised breaks.

The second option is an authorised Pearson VUE test centre. Centre and slot availability in Morocco can change, so check the Pearson VUE website before choosing your date. At a centre, you avoid technical risks linked to your own connection or computer.

  • With OnVUE: run the Pearson VUE system test on the computer you will use, several days before the exam
  • Prefer a wired connection or stable Wi-Fi, and let the people around you know
  • Either way: a valid official ID matching the exact name on your CompTIA account
  • Arrive (or log in) early: check-in takes time

What preparation plan will get you through Security+?

With a background in networks and systems, four to six weeks of steady work after the course is a realistic pace. Split your time according to the domain weights and keep the end of the plan for practice exams.

  • Week 1: General Security Concepts and a refresher on networking basics (ports, protocols, segmentation)
  • Week 2: Threats, Vulnerabilities & Mitigations; learn to recognise an attack from a symptom or a log
  • Week 3: Security Architecture; cloud, hybrid, data protection, continuity plans
  • Week 4: Security Operations, the heaviest domain; IAM, monitoring, vulnerability management, incident response
  • Week 5: Security Program Management & Oversight; risk, compliance, third parties, awareness
  • Week 6: timed 90-minute practice exams, dedicated PBQ practice, revision of weak areas

How do you renew Security+ every 3 years?

Security+ is valid for 3 years. To keep it, CompTIA offers its Continuing Education (CE) program: you earn continuing education units (CEUs) through training, conferences, work activities or other certifications, and pay the program fee. For Security+, the target is 50 CEUs over the period.

Another option: earning a higher-level CompTIA certification such as CySA+ or PenTest+ automatically renews Security+. That is often the most useful route, since it also moves your career forward. As the exact terms can change, always check CompTIA's official page before your expiry date.

Which jobs does Security+ open up in Morocco?

Security+ will not make you an expert overnight, but it makes your profile easy for recruiters to read and helps your application through screening. In Morocco, it is relevant to banks and insurers, telecom operators, the offshoring and nearshoring centres of Casablanca and Rabat, managed service providers and integrators. Law 05-20 on cybersecurity and DGSSI requirements increase the need for people who can apply good security practice.

  • Tier 1 SOC analyst
  • Systems or network administrator with security responsibilities
  • Security-focused support technician
  • Junior information security consultant
  • Junior IT compliance officer

Frequently asked questions

Should I take SY0-701 or wait for the new Security+ SY0-801?

CompTIA is preparing a new version, SY0-801, which several training providers expect in late 2026; the previous version usually remains available for about six months after a new one launches. A certification earned with SY0-701 stays valid for 3 years regardless of which version is current afterwards. If you are ready, there is no need to wait — just check the official dates on CompTIA's website before buying your voucher, as a voucher is tied to a specific exam version.

How many questions are on the Security+ SY0-701 exam?

The exam has up to 90 questions to answer in 90 minutes. It mixes multiple-choice and performance-based questions (PBQs), and you need 750 on a 100–900 scale to pass.

Can I take the Security+ exam online from Morocco?

Yes, through Pearson VUE OnVUE, from home or the office, with a remote proctor watching via webcam. You can also take it at an authorised Pearson VUE test centre, subject to availability.

Are there prerequisites for Security+?

There are no mandatory prerequisites. CompTIA does, however, recommend Network+ level knowledge and around two years of IT administration experience with a security focus.

How long is the Security+ certification valid?

It is valid for 3 years. You renew it through the CompTIA Continuing Education (CE) program by earning CEUs, or by passing a higher-level CompTIA certification such as CySA+.

Should I start with Security+ or CEH?

If you are new to security, Security+ is usually the best starting point because it covers all the fundamentals. CEH v13, which is more offensive, builds well on that foundation.
